Defination:

It is a low level computer software which is responsible for the controlling and managing computer hardware’s and also responsible for providing interface between user and application program. Operating system is the type of system utility programs.

Explaination:

In the very beginning of computer history the users only interact with computer systems with a command line interface. It is very difficult to communicate with computer through this interface because a user needs to a number of commands in order. But now a day’s all the computers using GUI (Graphical User Interface) operating system. This interface is much easier than the command line interface it is less complex and less time consuming.
Some major and important examples of operating systems that are commonly uses in these days are given below.
·        Microsoft Windows(98,99,2000,XP etc)
·        Linux (Ubuntu)
·        Apple (Mac OS)
·        Google(Android)
·        IOS

Command Line Interface:

Command Line Interface

Graphical User Interface(GUI):

Ubuntu (Linux) Operating System GUI

Functions of Operating System:
To provide user interface between user and computer hardware an operating system should be able to perform all there tasks.
1.     Enable startup applications. So, the operating system must have.
·        A text editor
·        A translator
·        An editor of links
2.     The operating system should be able to allocate the required resources to the process for execution. Such as, memory, I/O devices and memory protection requirements.
3.     Provide facilities to data like compression, sorting, storing, mixing and maintenance of library fillies.
4.     There is always a right and order way to execute processes for the ease of CPU (central processing unit).
Make execution of programs possible at both hardware and software with the help of system user communication system.
